MM Century Ushers in a New Era with Full E-Waste Recovery Facility at Penang Science Park North

SIMPANG AMPAT, 29 October 2024 – MM Century Sdn. Bhd. (MM Century) is proud to announce the completion and launch of its innovative full e-waste recovery facility at Penang Science Park North (PSPN).

Officially completed in August 2023 after two years of construction, the state-of-the-art facility represents a significant milestone in MM Century’s mission to set a new benchmark in sustainable waste management and lead the nation towards a sustainable future.

Strategically located in Penang Science Park North, a dynamic industrial hub boasting remarkable accessibility to key industrial zones and vital highways, the facility also serves as the new headquarters for MM Century. As a full e-waste recovery centre, the facility is poised to make a substantial positive environmental impact with an annual processing capacity of 1,200 tonnes of e-waste.

Director of MM Century, Ashok Kumar Rangayah, remarked, “The completion of our new headquarters and full e-waste recovery facility at Penang Science Park North marks a transformative step for MM Century and the region. Our goal has always been to be at the forefront of environmentally friendly waste management, and this facility embodies our commitment to sustainability. By implementing an entirely dry recovery process, we ensure that our operations contribute to a cleaner, greener future without generating hazardous wastewater or toxic emissions.”

Pioneering Environmentally-friendly Technology

The facility at Penang Science Park North is MM Century’s second facility. Its first is a total waste management and recovery centre in Bukit Minyak Industrial Park. The PSPN facility is one of the first in the region to adopt Dry Process Technology for e-waste recovery.

Unlike chemical-based recovery methods that rely on hazardous chemicals like cyanide and acids, the Dry Process eliminates water pollution risks. It ensures that no hazardous wastewater is generated during recovery, safeguarding local water sources from contamination.

“E-waste is a growing concern, and as industries advance, our waste management solutions must evolve to keep abreast of the latest developments,” Ashok added. “Our dry recovery process avoids the environmental hazards posed by chemical methods, ensuring that we contribute to reducing the greenhouse effect and other environmental challenges associated with conventional recovery processes.”

A Hub for Innovation and Sustainability

MM Century’s full e-waste recovery facility integrates the latest technologies to optimise efficiency and environmental sustainability. Powered by renewable energy from solar panels, the PSPN facility boasts energy-efficient machinery that undergoes regular maintenance to ensure its longevity and minimal environmental footprint. The by-products generated, such as fibre from the recovery process, are responsibly managed, with efforts underway to explore recycling opportunities to minimise further waste sent to landfills.

In keeping with global industry standards, MM Century adheres to rigorous safety and environmental management certifications, including ISO 27001 for Information Security Management Systems, ISO 14001 for Environmental Management Systems (EMS), ISO 45001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OSHMS), and ISO 9001 for Quality Management Systems.

These certifications reflect MM Century’s dedication to the highest environmental sustainability and workplace safety standards while providing quality service to its clients.

Services Tailored to Modern Industry Needs

MM Century’s PSPN facility offers a comprehensive suite of services designed to meet the diverse needs of industries that generate e-waste. These services include:

  • Scheduled waste recycling and recovery (SW104, SW108, SW110, SW325)
  • IT Asset Disposition (ITAD)
  • Data destruction, including media sanitisation and magnetic media degaussing
  • Confidential document shredding
  • Product destruction

The facility’s clients come from various sectors, including the semiconductor and telecommunications industries, where responsible and secure e-waste disposal is crucial.

Looking Ahead

With its expansion into full e-waste recovery at its PSPN facility, MM Century aims to play a pivotal role in Malaysia’s waste management landscape, contributing to the national vision for a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.

In addition to its current achievements, MM Century is working toward securing SERI R2v3 certification and a Sustainability Rating, further solidifying its commitment to responsible waste management. By 2026, MM Century plans to expand its operations with two additional facilities: a comprehensive scheduled waste processing plant in Simpang Pulai, Perak and a waste-to-energy recovery plant at Kapar 2, Selangor.

Emphasising the company’s long-term goals, Ashok said: “With the launch of this facility, we are not only addressing today’s industrial needs but also laying the groundwork for future innovation in sustainable waste management. As we look ahead, our focus remains on expanding responsibly—with new facilities on the horizon and certifications that reflect our dedication to sustainability and safety. We are committed to helping industries dispose of their waste in the greenest, most efficient way possible.”
