MM Century Is Expanding Its E-waste Recovery Facility

PULAU PINANG, January 2022 – MM Century, a fast-growing environmental management services company based in Malaysia, is expanding its existing partial recovery services for e-wastes into a full-fledge recovery facility in Penang Science Park North. The ongoing construction of the new recovery facility for electronic waste is expected to be completed by the 2nd quarter of the year.

In Malaysia, electronic wastes are collected and treated only at facilities licensed by the Department of Environment. By February 2013, 18 full and 128 partial recovery facilities had been permitted to recover precious (gold, silver, and platinum) and valuable (copper, aluminium, and nickel) metals from e-waste.

These recovery facilities also handle the hazardous heavy metals (cadmium, lead, mercury) found in electronic waste to prevent environmental pollution, risk human health, and manage recyclable items, such as plastic and glass.

According to World Economic Forum (WEF), in 2016, the world generated 44.7 million tonnes of e-waste, but only 20% was recycled through appropriate channels. MM Century hopes to address the increasing amount of electronic and electrical products being discarded without the intention of reuse.
